WALSH, Maxwell

Ventre a Terre - All Out

No.536838, Sergeant (pilot), Maxwell John Shipp WALSH
Aged 26

No.30 Squadron, Royal Air Force
Died on Active Service on Saturday, 24th May 1941

Maxwell Walsh was born in 1915 (Newmarket Q2-1915 3B:810), son of John William and Sarah Evelyn WALSH (née SHIPP). Stepson of Grace Alice WALSH (née STARLING) of Burrough Green.
His mother had died in 1927 (Newmarket Q4-1927 3B:524).

In the 1939 register his father [8-7-1881] sub post master and stepmother [13-5-1901] were at Post Office, Shop Lane, Burrough Green with Gladys STARLING [5-2-1900]. There are three closed records

As he is listed as Died on Active Service this implies that he did not lose his life as a result of enemy action. He may have died as a result of a accident, drowning, or illness. Since he is buried in Cairo, which was a large hospital base, it could be an illness or wounds that ended his life. Unless his service details are seen, there is no way of telling.

Flying Bristol Blenheims, 30 squadron ( call sign VT) had been operating in Greece and Crete and after the fall of Crete moved back to Egypt, flying Hurricanes as night defence for Alexandria. They were based at Amriya from 16th May 1941 to 14 June 1941
